If you’re looking for a significant update to iOS 16 ; Apple’s next software update for iPhones — the rumors around Apple’s WWDC 2022 plans suggest you could be in luck.
It’s a safe guess that we’ll get a sneak peek at iOS 16, the iPhone’s next big software upgrade; which will arrive later this year. This update should include more than minor adjustments; Apple watchers anticipate big improvements to the iOS software; including everything from improved existing functions to entirely new applications and capabilities.
According to reports ahead of next week’s WWDC 2022 keynote, iOS 16 will seem quite similar to iOS 15. However, when the final version of iOS 16 is published this autumn; you may notice some significant changes on your iPhone.

Changes to the lock screen in iOS 16
The iPhone lock screen is simple, with only the time and date displayed, as well as any alerts received. You may change the wallpaper on your lock screen by selecting one of Apple’s provided selections; or uploading a photo of your own. But that’s all there is to it.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman; this will change in iOS 16, as the lock screen will get new wallpapers with widget-like features.
Apple launched the option to add widgets to your iPhone’s home screen two years ago; and they allowed quick access to information such as current weather, future appointments, music playing settings, and more. Lock screen widgets, presumably; would provide the same functionality, allowing you to view pertinent information without having to unlock your iPhone.
This anticipated lock screen update would probably pave the way for Apple to introduce support for an always-on display; which has been available on Android phones for years. Apple’s new iPhone 14 Pro phones, according to reports, will have always-on screens when they appear this autumn. It’s possible that Apple may confirm that capability at WWDC 2022 when introducing iOS 16; but it’s more probable that the company would keep quiet about iOS 16 capabilities; connected to its next iPhones until those devices are ready to be announced.
Notification improvements in iOS 16
According to speculations, Apple isn’t done changing how you control notifications in iOS 16. So, following the previous overhauls, what’s left to change? Plenty, according to my colleague Jordan Palmer; who wants to see a broader range of actions associated with alerts in iOS 16 — such as deleting emails, marking items as read, and so on. Apple may also enhance the way alerts are grouped and cleared. To me, those all seem like good adjustments.
We won’t know exactly what Apple has planned until Monday’s WWDC presentation, when iOS 16 is unveiled. However, it appears that Apple has prioritized alerts in this version of the iPhone OS.
Health-tracking features in iOS 16
Apple frequently devotes time during its keynotes and product releases to describing the many health-tracking capabilities of its products. And I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of it happening again at WWDC 2022, especially in regards to iOS 16. In fact, Gurman predicts a slew of new features for the iPhone’s Health app; many of which will likely combine with Apple Watch capabilities.
In addition to iOS 16; Apple is expected to show out watchOS 9 at WWDC; so we should expect to see a lot of ways that your phone and wristwatch can work together to track health metrics and activity; and even even alert you to early warning signals that you should seek medical attention for.
Messages in iOS 16 have been updated
The health app isn’t the only one getting a makeover. Messages is also believe to be get additional capabilities; which isn’t surprising given that it’s one of the iPhone’s most utilized built-in applications. Messages has gotten a lot of love in previous iOS versions; so it’s doubtful that iOS 16 will be any different.
Gurman mentioned that Messages might incorporate audio messaging capabilities, similar to those available on other social networking applications. In the present version of iOS; you may record audio messages and transmit them to recipients from within Messages; thus this capability may be extended in the iOS 16 upgrade.
AR/VR features in iOS 16
It’s no secret that Apple is interested in mixed reality; to the point that it’s supposedly working on an Apple AR/VR headset for 2023; as well as a realityOS to operate on it.
According to reports, the Apple headset will not be on display at WWDC; but we may learn more about Apple’s ambitions to increase the number of AR-friendly applications available; by providing iPhone app developers with an upgraded version of ARKit. Developers may utilize these technologies to include augmented reality elements into their apps.
16 new applications for iOS
According to an earlier rumor on iOS 16; Gurman claims that iOS 16 would have “new Apple applications”. There have been no further indications as to what those applications may be; however I am happy to provide some fresh iOS 16 app proposals; including a dedicated subscription management app and a recipe organizer.
The fact is that we’re unlikely to learn about new applications before WWDC; with the full specifics of what Apple has planned appearing until after the developer conference’s iOS 16 preview. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer.
